Papaya Sweet Surprise

Grow the tropical fruits of Papaya, also known as Pawpaw. Carica Papaya plants also make good foliage specimens for indoors.

The flowers are similar in shape to the flowers of the Plumeria, but are much smaller and wax-like. They appear on the axils of the leaves, maturing into the large 15–45 cm long, 10–30 cm diameter fruit. The fruit is ripe when it feels soft (like a ripe avocado or a bit softer) and its skin has attained an amber to orange hue.

Sow seeds March to May into pots or trays of moist soil-based potting compost mixed with some coarse horticultural sand and cover with a sprinkling of compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator or warm place, and keep at a constant temperature of around 25C. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 21-30 days.
