Mespilus japonica

This beautiful little evergreen tree with beautiful foliage, fragrant flowers, delicious fruit and it is easy to grow! The Mespilus or loquat grows to about 6m assuming a rounded form with upward pointing branches. The large leaves are about 8 cm long and are a deeply textured dark green on top, while the bottom surface is light green and slightly fuzzy. New foliage on some specimens is an attractive rusty red. Deliciously scented, furry looking white flowers grow in terminal clusters in late fall. They are followed by small, edible yellow fruits in spring. Mespilus fruits taste like mix of apple, quince, cherry, lemon, pear and apricot. Distinctive feature is that fruits must be collected after frost, so even in late autumn you will have fresh berries. Mespilus fruits are perfect also for making jams, preserves, jellies, fruit drinks, juices, candy, fillings for cakes and drinks. Winterhard up to -35C.

Before sowing the seeds should be scarified (eg, rub sandpaper over 3-5 minutes), then soak in warm water 24-27 C for 3-4 days. After that, the seeds need to be stratified in a moist environment for 3-4 months at a temperature of about 5 ° C. Seedlings can be grown outdoor and in greenhouses. In the first year Mespilus grows slowly, then the growth rate increases.
