Red Japanese barberry is the purple-leaved version of this popular deciduous thorny shrub. It is a dense, deciduous, spiny shrub which grows 0,5-1m high. It has year-round interest, firstly in spring when scented clusters of yellow flowers 5-8 mm in diameter appear on arching stems before the striking deep reddish purple and violet. Finally, from August to next spring, the whole plant is smothered in bright red berries. As well as being a beautiful ornamental shrub, this barberry is an excellent hedge plant, looking good in the middle to rear of beds and borders.
Sow anytime in a cool bright spot outside. May be slow germinate.
